ASHEVILLE BURIES POWER WITH SEVEN RUN THIRD

The Asheville Tourists recorded eight straight hits and scored seven times on nine hits in the top of the third inning to defeat the West Virginia Power 7-2 on Wednesday night at Appalachian Power Park.

Beau Seabury began the string of eight straight hits with a one-out single.  Helder Velazquez doubled Seabury in before Bo Bowman, Darin Holcomb and Kevin Clark smacked back-to-back-to-back RBI singles.  David Christensen doubled in the next two runs and he scored on Brian Lapin’s two-bagger to cap the inning.

West Virginia plated both of their runs in the bottom of the seventh.  Caleb Gindl began the inning with his eleventh homer of the season, his second in as many days.  Zelous Wheeler followed Gindl’s bomb with a base hit and advanced two bags on a pair of wild pitches.  Curt Rindal drove him in on a Sacrifice Fly.

Connor Graham (11-6) tossed five and two-thirds scoreless innings of one-hit ball and fanned five in a winning effort.    Dan Merklinger (7-9) was tagged for seven runs on eight hits over two and two-thirds and was tagged with the loss.  Roque Mercedes, Mike Ramlow and Curtis Pasma combined to toss six and two-thirds scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

The Power fell to 71-57 on the year and 39-20 in the second half with the loss.  The Tourists improved to 79-50 on the year and 33-26 in the second half with the win. Gindl went 2-for-3, turning in the only multi-hit game for the Power.  Eric Fryer went 1-for-3 and extended his on base streak to 29 games.

The Power will continue the four game series against the Asheville Tourists at Appalachian Power Park on Thursday night.  The Power will start right hander Evan Anundsen (11-6, 3.96) and the Tourists will counter with left hander Christian Friedrich (0-0, 0.00) The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.

Rindal and Wilson Share Award

Power infielders Curt Rindal and Steffan Wilson both turned in remarkable offensive performances during West Virginia’s recent home stand, and they were rewarded on Monday when they were named South Atlantic League Co-offensive Players of the Week.

Wilson, Milwaukee’s 28th Round pick in the 2007 draft went 16-33 during the eight game home stand and scored 13 times while driving in nine runs.  At the end of the home stand, he had taken the league lead in runs batted in with 85.  Wilson also hit his 18th homerun of the season in the final game of the home stand.  The 18 homers are tied for fifth most in the league.

Rindal really turned it on in West Virginia’s series against Hickory.  The second year player out of the University of Washington went 9-for-14 against the Crawdads with six runs and 11 RBI.  During the home stand, he drove in 13 runs, scored seven times and went 11-for-22.  He’s currently riding a seven game hitting streak and he has reached safely in each of his last 15 games.

Wilson and Rindal became the third and fourth Power players to be named South Atlantic League players of the week this season.  Chris Cody was named the South Atlantic League pitcher of the week in May and Eric Fryer was named the South Atlantic League player of the week back in July.

The Power will continue the four game series against the Augusta GreenJackets at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Tuesday night.  The Power will start left hander Lucas Luetge (1-1, 3.52) and the GreenJackets will counter with left hander Craig Clark (6-4, 4.12).  The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
